Anatomical Snuff-box Pain - Scaphoid Fracture
نویسنده
چکیده
The hand and wrist are used in almost all sports and the hand is often the least protected part of the upper extremity, leaving it vulnerable to injuries. Therefore, the hand is the most frequently injured part of the athlete's upper extremity. These injuries vary widely; diagnosis is straightforward for many but not for others. When not diagnosed early and managed appropriately, these injuries may result in long-term disabling conditions. Evaluation begins with a careful physical examination, including localisation of swelling and tenderness and functional testing of joint stability. Radiographic studies are often needed. Treatment of the injuries ranges from immobilistion to surgery.

Clinical Signs of Scaphoid Fracture
This is a prospective study evaluating the efficacy of four clinical signs believed to be useful in the diagnosis of scaphoid fracture. Two hundred and fifteen consecutive patients with suspected scaphoid fracture were examined on two separate occasions to evaluate tenderness in the anatomical snuff box (ASB), tenderness over the scaphoid tubercle (ST), pain on longitudinal compression of the t...
متن کاملStress fracture of the scaphoid in an elite junior tennis player: a case report and review of the literature.
BACKGROUND The carpal scaphoid is the most commonly fractured carpal bone in young adults after a fall on an outstretched arm that results in acute dorsal flexion of the wrist. However, stress fractures of the scaphoid are relatively rare. To the best of our knowledge, we describe the first case in the literature of carpal scaphoid stress fracture in a tennis player. CASE PRESENTATION An 18-y...
متن کاملThe Accuracy of Pain Measurement in Diagnosis of Scaphoid Bone Fractures in Patients with Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Report of 175 Cases
INTRODUCTION Scaphoid fracture is the most common fracture among the bones of the wrist. Plain radiography has a sensitivity of 59 to 79 percent for the diagnosis of scaphoid fracture after injury. Casting is done to avoid complications in patients with suspected fractures with normal radiography. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 99%. To avoid unne...
متن کاملScaphoid tubercle tenderness: a better indicator of scaphoid fractures?
Tenderness in the anatomical snuff box (ASB) has long been accepted as an indicator of a possible scaphoid fracture. The longitudinal axis of the scaphoid lies in an anteroposterior plane, perpendicular to the remainder of the carpal bones, in the radially deviated wrist. The scaphoid tubercle can therefore be easily and accurately palpated on the palmar aspect of the radially deviated wrist. T...
متن کاملIntroducing a Clinical Practice Guideline Using Early CT in the Diagnosis of Scaphoid and Other Fractures
OBJECTIVE We developed and implemented clinical practice guideline (CPG) using computerized tomography (CT) as the initial imaging method in the emergency department management of scaphoid fractures. We hypothesized that this CPG would decrease unnecessary immobilization and lead to earlier return to work. METHODS This observational study evaluated implementation of our CPG, which incorporate...

BACKGROUND: The scaphoid is the most prominent of the carpal bones in the first row and the most frequently fractured of all the carpal bones. Bilateral simultaneous scaphoid fractures are uncommon. OBJECTIVE: To report bilateral simultaneous fractures of the carpal scaphoid bones and their successful treatment with bilateral thumb spacia casts METHODS: A 28-year-old medical practitioner presen...
